artful tangent (n): a bold undertaking that actively reflects the human imagination that can suddenly change course.

Welcome to artfulTANGENTS! We are glad to have you join us on our tangent-filled adventures.
We are Kirsten and Clare, a mother/daughter duo who find the joy in everyday creativity and the tangents that spontaneously emerge. And believe me there are a lot of tange…. oooo, did you know that: if you start counting from the number one, you won’t say/spell the letter ‘a’ until you hit one thousand? Discover and partake in our love for art, food, home, laughter and learning. Why be confined to one avenue of expression or curiosity, when you can find enjoyment in a whole multitude of possibilities?
Embrace our mayhem, and we hope you find some inspiration to join in with our and your own artful tangents.

Hiya! Right off the bat I should admit something … I am an art geek, and proud of it. Since going to the Dallas Museum of Art in the 3rd grade on a field trip, I knew that art would be a major part of my life. I was involved with performance and visual arts growing up, have an undergraduate and masters degree in Art History, and my entire professional career has been in the arts. I believe that art and creative expression are ways for us to experience individual and communal understanding and joy.
Random facts: I can quote almost any episode of Gilmore Girls to you; from experience I know that roadtrips in the UK are way more fun than roadtrips in the US; my older brothers made me fluent in sarcasm; up until my senior year of high school, I thought ‘squoze’ was the past tense for ‘squeeze’; and faith, family and friends will always be my top priorities.

Where to begin?… First, my body is A LOT older than my spirit. Joy in everyday pleasures has been a constant in my life. While a Finance degree taught me about the workings of the world, I have never stopped my quest for learning and teaching myself new disciplines. Since college, my husband and I have enjoyed our ‘life together’ adventure. Then, never shy about jumping in ‘whole hog,’ we had 3 boys in 4 years! Clare was born four years later. In an over simplification, life was wonderfully chaotic. Instilling a love of learning and teaching them to embrace their unique gifts while exploring the world became my full time job, along with a healthy dose of volunteering. Throughout, I tried to become accomplished in any/all domestic arts as well as photography, video editing and painting. I look at most any situation as a challenge rather than an obstacle.
My random factiods: All mothers of boys need to learn how to whistle, LOUDLY. Surprisingly, British food can be excellent, you just have to know where to eat. From personal experience I know that a ball can be kicked with both feet, at the same time….don’t try it.
