Happy Valentine’s Day!

Does Valentine’s Day bring a smile to your face or does it make you smirk with derision?  For a Hallmark holiday, it is rather polarizing.  And yes, there is a large cheesy factor to the day, but hey… it means that there is a whole slew of excellent candy options.  

Personally, I like Valentine’s Day, regardless if I have a date, plans with my girl friends, or if I’m staying at home enjoying a gin & tonic.  For me, it is a fun occasion to remind those in your life that you love them.  Even as an adult, the things I like about Valentine’s Day are the same reasons as to why I liked it in elementary school.  (Anyone else spend far too much thought, time and effort decorating their shoebox mailboxes during elementary school?)  As a kid, I didn’t care if I got a Valentine from that one boy I had a crush on.  I was more interested seeing the variety of cards I got from all of my friends.  I was more interested in being intentional with my Valentine’s to others.  And let’s be honest, I was more interested in the snacks, and arts-and-craft side of the whole day.

Now that I’m an aunt, I love sending Valentine’s to my nieces and nephews.  Sending them personalized cards and little gifts, reminding them that they are cherished, will be memories and traditions that we will build upon for years to come.  With my friends, dropping a card in the mail is just a small gesture that has a huge impact.  And with all the bills and catalogues we receive in the mail, there is nothing better than seeing a handwritten address and knowing that you just got some good old fashioned snail mail.    

This Valentine’s Day will look different for most of us.  While staying safe at home, let’s not lose the magic that filled the day when we were little.  Whether you’re sending a Valentine or a Galentine, let’s send a little bit of love through the mail.
